Hannes™ Piezo immune to mechanical wear and corrosion

Unlike metalbased piezo systems and the widely known problems they are plagued with the Schaller Hannes™ Piezo bridge is constructed differently - and for good reasons. 

  1. The piezo is installed deep into the saddle unit from underneath. Since neither string nor strumming hand gets in contact with the piezo mechanical wear and tear is never going to be an issue. 
  2. Each individual piezo it is hermetically sealed in its slot. Since sweat and moisture will never get in touch with the piezo crystal the system withstands the common threats of moisture i.e. corrosion and short circuit.

All this guaranteeing unlimited playing performance and consistent tonal excellence.  

Important note:

Though an ideal combination with the Schaller FlagShip preamp, the Hannes™ Piezo bridge is compatible and ready to rock with all common piezo preamps on the market.

But even by itself the Hannes™ Piezo delivers a signal so strong, clear and musical it can be fed directly into an amp or a PA without compromising its signal fidelity.

We deliver our Hannes™ Piezo bridge with a cable length of 200mm and a multi-connector (see the tab "images") with a cable-length of 150mm.
A Short History of Hannes™ Piezo R&D

Fundamental research in the field of piezo electronics brought Schaller‘s Hannes™ bridge into the spotlight. Painstaking testing proved the unique bridge construction and materials to be the superior basis to start from.

Schaller‘s profound and longtime expertise in the field of piezo-technology became the foundation of a new generation of piezo-bridges. The use of cutting-edge piezo-elements and sealing-compounds – researched, developed and produced in Germany – result in a durable, yet ultra-sensitive bridge design.

Next was milling, soldering and installing in unprecedented accuracy „where micrometers make the tone“. Hermetically sealed piezo-elements proved to deliver long trouble-free use and abuse and helped to avoid erratic dynamics so widely associated with piezo-pickup technology. As with the Hannes™ bridge itself Schaller‘s motto is sleek design and unobtrusive technology. Therefor the piezo-elements were invisibly installed into the saddles rather than on their top. Please note that the technical data can also vary slightly, depending on the surface color. This is due to the difference in the galvanic coating and the galvanic layering, which depends on the color (nickel, chrome etc).

Allen Key

We use six different Allen keys to adjust the various screws on our bridges. The sizes for these are 1.27mm, 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm, 3.0mm and 3.5mm. The following table shows which Allen keys should be used for each type of bridge (all measurements are stated in mm):

FAQ20010 I am a left-handed person, what do I need to consider with regard to Schaller bridges? Are they all suitable for left-handers without restrictions?

All Schaller bridges are suitable for left-handed guitars, with the exception of the "Hannes" and "STM". This is due to the diagonal arrangement of parts/saddles, which unfortunately cannot be altered.

FAQ20020 What do I need to do if I install a new bridge on my guitar and the existing drill holes are too large for the bushings included with the bridge?
We recommend filling in the drill holes and then re-drilling them - this also prevents unwanted resonance and movement. Any guitar maker should be able to do this for you.
FAQ20060 How does the Schaller fine-tuner (the tailpiece with the additional screws) work?

When stringing the guitar, please tune it as usual using the machine heads. Loosen the screws on the fine-tuner to the half-way point (or to the 3/4 point). When the guitar has been tuned using the machine heads, they can be more finely adusted as follows: Tightening the screw raises the pitch; loosening it lowers the pitch.

When making the initial adjustment, please allow the screws to protrude a little more than necessary (but not far enough to allow them fall out). This means they can be tightened accordingly during playing.

If this tightening results in the screws being tightened to the limit, please loosen them again and re-tune the string using the machine heads as usual. Then fine-tune again by tightening the screws once this has been done.

FAQ20080 The Schaller 3D-6 bridge has a screw on the treble side - what is this for?
You can use this screw to fix the string saddles in place so that they don't knock together and rattle when aggressive playing techniques are used.
FAQ20085 On a 3D-6 bridge, the distance of the Rollen varies, as soon as there is no string pressure on them. This changes the string distances when the strings are being changed, when the fingerboard is cleaned, etc. What can I do about this?

A solution is 'squaring the circle' so-to-speak. On the one hand we have complete flexibility of movement so the string distances can be varied at will, and on the other, static rollers, which makes the problem almost technically impossible to solve.

As a rule, we use rollers with minimal tolerances. This means that, although the rollers provide mechanical resistance, they can be turned. This redueces the movement of the rollers when they are touched gently.

Another possibility is to secure the screws additionally by applying a little glue to them. This makes the rollers tight. They can be loosened again by applying a little strength.

There is no 'lever' on the rollers located on the bridge to enable significant torque to be applied to them. For this reason, it is important that the glue applied for added security of the screw that has low viscosity, i.e. a glue that has enough adhesiveness to secure the rollers but still allows them to be loosened by hand afterwards. Try it!

FAQ20090 Can I fit Schaller's new "Hannes" bridge to any guitar?

Our Schaller "Hannes" bridge can be fitted to any guitar, provided that the body is flat at the point where the bridge is to be placed. Please find under Products/Product help/Hannes-Bridge. All information concerning Hannes-Bridge available.

FAQ20100 How is switching done on the pickups on the Schaller Piezo bridges?
There are no specific instructions for these Schaller bridges because the connection is in fact very simple.

You need to bring each of the 6 wires together in just one cable soldered with a jack socket or plug. (6x hosts and 6x cores together):

These cables can be fed directly into an amplifier or via an internal preamp.
There is also the option of feeding and switching the wires individually. This does make the whole thing more complicated, however, and is not necessary for "normal" use.
FAQ20110 Are the sounds individually picked up per saddle with the Schaller piezo bridges?
Yes, but normally they are combined to one line in a type-related way. If required, discuss other possibilities with a guitar maker or electrician.
FAQ20120 I would like to change the bridge on my guitar to a Schaller bridge, but I would like to re-use the existing screw sleeves if possible. How do I know whether or not the height adjustment screws of the Schaller bridge will fit the original sleeves?

FAQ20130 Would it cause problems if I were to fit a Schaller STM or GTM bridge (which has a 14" fretboard radius) to a Les Paul that has a 12" fretboard radius?

No, that will not cause any problems. In relation to the narrow width of the fretboard, the difference between the 12" and the 14" radius is so small that there is no discernible difference.

FAQ20150 Can I file small grooves for the strings into the saddle of my 3D-6 Piezo bridge?

The Piezo elements are approximately 1.5 mm under the saddle. This means you can file in small grooves for the strings, but please do so with extreme care, in order to avoid damage to the piezos. Please also be aware that this modification may mean that not all piezo crystals are at the same distance from the respective string, which in turn may alter the sound of the instrument.
